The University of Kentucky community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Nicholas “Nic” “Happy” Smith, a talented football player, dedicated student, and beloved friend who passed away at the age of 20. The university announced Smith’s passing on Monday following reports that he was found deceased in a campus residence hall. According to university officials, the University of Kentucky Police Department responded to the scene, and preliminary investigations indicated no signs of foul play.
Known affectionately as “Happy” and “Big Happ,” Nic earned a reputation for bringing energy, encouragement, and positivity wherever he went. A sophomore enrolled in the Community Leadership and Development Program within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, he balanced academic pursuits with his commitment to the Kentucky football program.
As a defensive lineman for the Kentucky Wildcats, Nic was respected for his dedication, perseverance, and team-first mentality. Although he redshirted during the previous season, coaches and teammates recognized his potential, work ethic, and commitment to personal growth both on and off the field.
